Supernova Explosions from Accretion Disk Winds
نویسنده
چکیده
Winds blown from accretion disks formed inside massive rotating stars may result in stellar explosions observable as Type Ibc and Type II supernovae. A key feature of the winds is their ability to produce the radioactive Ni necessary to power a supernova light curve. The wind strength depends on accretion disk cooling by neutrino emission and photo-disintegration of bound nuclei. These cooling processes depend on the angular momentum of the stellar progenitor via the virial temperature at the Kepler radius where the disk forms. The production of an observable supernova counterpart to a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) may therefore depend on the angular momentum of the stellar progenitor. Stars with low angular momentum may produce a GRB without making an observable supernova. Stars with large angular momentum may make extremely bright and energetic supernovae like SN 1998bw. Stars with an intermediate range of angular momentum may simultaneously produce a supernova and a GRB.

Collapsar Disks and Winds
Winds blown from collapsar accretion disks may produce observable stellar explosions independent of any GRB-(and afterglow)-producing jets which may be simultaneously produced. The production of winds is controlled by the accretion disk physics, in particular, the nature of disk cooling via neutrino emission and photodisintegration of heavy nuclei. These temperature-dependent processes depend o...
متن کاملAgn and Galactic Sites of Cosmic Ray Origin
In the following we review recent progress in our understanding of the physics of energetic particles in our Galaxy, in active galaxies such as starburst galaxies, in active galactic nuclei and in the jets and radio hot spots of powerful radio galaxies and radioloud quasars. We propose that cosmic rays originate mainly in three sites, a) normal supernova explosions into the approximately homoge...
متن کاملNickel-rich outflows from accretion disks formed by the accretion-induced collapse of white dwarfs
A white dwarf (WD) approaching the Chandrasekhar mass may in several circumstances undergo accretion-induced collapse (AIC) to a neutron star (NS) before a thermonuclear explosion ensues. It has generally been assumed that such an accretioninduced collapse (AIC) does not produce a detectable supernova (SN). If, however, the progenitor WD is rapidly rotating (as may be expected due to its prior ...
متن کاملA Fallback Disk Model for Ultraluminous X-ray Sources
Current stellar evolution models predict that during the core collapse of massive stars, a considerable amount of the stellar material will fall back onto the compact, collapsed remnants (neutron stars or black holes), usually in the form of an accretion disk. This triggers rapid mass accretion onto, e.g., the black hole, and produces energetic explosions known as Gamma-ray bursts. However it i...
متن کاملWinds and Accretion in Young Stars
Establishing the origin of accretion powered winds from forming stars is critical for understanding angular momentum evolution in the star-disk interaction region. Here, the high velocity component of accretion powered winds is launched and accreting stars are spun down, in defiance of the expected spin-up during magnetospheric accretion. T Tauri stars in the final stage of disk accretion offer...
